Things To Look For Before Buying A Roof Top Tent
Type Of Tent:
Understanding the type of roof top tent you need is crucial for making the right choice. Roof top tents are typically categorized into two main types: hard shell and soft shell.
Hard shell tents feature a rigid, clamshell design that folds open vertically. These tents are known for their durability and ease of setup. They’re perfect for campers who value convenience and want a quick and hassle-free camping experience. A popular example of a hard shell tent is the James Baroud Evasion, known for its robust construction and sleek design.
On the other hand, soft shell tents are made from fabric materials and fold open horizontally. These tents are lighter in weight and often more affordable than their hard shell counterparts. They’re ideal for campers who prioritize versatility and prefer a more traditional tent experience. The Overland Vehicle Systems (OVS) Nomadic 4 is a well-known soft shell tent, offering a spacious interior and easy setup for outdoor enthusiasts.
Weight:
The weight of a roof top tent is a critical factor to consider, especially if you have a smaller vehicle or a weaker roof rack system. It’s essential to ensure that the weight of the tent is compatible with your vehicle’s dynamic weight capacity to prevent any issues during your travels.
For example, if you have a Subaru Crosstrek with a roof rack system, you’ll want to choose a roof top tent that is lightweight and won’t exceed the weight limit of your rack. The Guana Equipment Wanaka 55″, weighing in at around 130 pounds, is a suitable option for smaller vehicles with limited weight capacity.
Sleeping Capacity:
Sleeping capacity refers to how many people can comfortably sleep inside the tent. Roof top tents typically come in various sizes, including 2-person, 3-person, 4-person, or even 5-person capacity.
For instance, if you’re a couple planning a camping trip, a 2-person roof top tent like the Tepui Autana 3 is an excellent choice. It provides ample space for two people to sleep comfortably and enjoy their outdoor adventures together.
Materials & Design:
Investing in quality materials and smart design is essential when selecting a roof top tent. Look for features such as thicker ripstop canvas, durable aluminum structures, and stainless steel hardware to ensure longevity and reliability.
For example, the Overland Vehicle Systems (OVS) Nomadic 3 tent is renowned for its high-quality materials and innovative design. With a rugged aluminum base and 600D poly-cotton ripstop fabric, it offers durability and comfort for outdoor enthusiasts.
Brand:
Choosing a reputable brand ensures peace of mind and reliability when purchasing a roof top tent. Reputable brands have experience in addressing various concerns, including manufacturing errors, spare parts availability, and warranties.
For instance, brands like Tepui and Overland Vehicle Systems (OVS) have established themselves as leaders in the roof top tent industry, known for their quality products and excellent customer service. By choosing a trusted brand, you can rest assured that you’re investing in a reliable and durable tent for your outdoor adventures.
Seasonality:
Consider the seasonality of the tent to ensure it meets your camping needs, especially if you plan to camp in colder conditions. While many roof top tents are marketed as 4-season tents, it’s essential to verify their suitability for winter camping.
For example, the Free Spirit Recreation (FSR) Evolution V2 tent is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, making it ideal for year-round camping adventures. With its thick poly-cotton canvas and sturdy construction, it provides insulation and protection against the elements, ensuring a comfortable and safe camping experience in any season.
Price:
The last thing on the list of what you should be looking for in a roof top tent is the price. Now as we mentioned before, if you have a certain budget and can’t go over it then you should try to find the best possible roof top tent that will suit your needs and your lifestyle for that price. Types Of Roof Top Tents
We will divide this section into the two types of tents, and then break each section down into the different designs of the two main types of roof top tents that exist:
- Hardshell
- Softshell
Hard Shell Roof Top Tents
Now as you can guess by the name, these roof top tents have a hard shell that can be made either from hard ABS plastic or even from high-quality aluminum. These RTT’s are the sturdiest variant out of the two and can withstand the harshest weather conditions and even the strongest of winds. Many of the hard shell tents use nitrogen gas charged struts so that they can deploy themselves in a matter of seconds after unlatching the latches.
They are also very aerodynamic. Most of them are very low profile and have a hard shell that will reduce wind drag and noise even when driving at high speeds. They are heavier than the soft shell ones but they also have better insulation as most of the hard shell RTT’s out there also have insulated shells. They can have 3 opening styles and those are “Pop Up”, “Fold Out”, and “Clamshell” opening styles. They are also more expensive than soft shell roof top tents.
Opening Style
Pop Up Roof Top Tent
Pop up roof top tents have an opening mechanism just as it sounds. Their upper hard shell “pops up” and the tent is ready to be used. That means that you would only need about 30 seconds up to a minute to open up this kind of a tent. All you need to do is unlatch the latches and watch it deploy itself. Some Pop Up roof top tents have gas charged struts and some even use electromotors to push the top half of the shell into position.
Great thing about this style of a tent is that you can have openings on all 4 sides that you can use to enjoy the scenery around you. Depending on the model, you will have the entrance point either on the side or the back of it. They are very durable and reliable and will definetly save you some time on your next overlanding adventure.
Fold Out Roof Top Tent
Fold out roof top tents are very easy to deploy too! It may not be as fast as the previously mentioned style but regardless it will not take you more than 2 minutes to do so. Unlike the previous type, this one has a half that is suspended in the air. Now don’t let that concern you in any way as these kinds of tents are also very rugged and have strong and durable floor panels that can withstand a lot of weight capacity.
They are also bigger than Pop Up tents and besides providing you with a 360-degree view of your surroundings it also offers a sky view window that can let in more sunlight during the day and will allow you to look at the stars at night. Fold out roof top tents can be used for both smaller or bigger vehicles, depending on the weight of the tent, and will make your next overlanding adventure a whole lot more enjoyable.
Clamshell Roof Top Tent
Clamshell roof top tents got the name because they open up like a clam. Some of them have south-facing openings, however there are also models of clamshell roof tents that have a side clam opening mechanism. They are also one of the easiest tents to open. They also use gas charged structs and will take them less than a minute to deploy.
The only downside to them is that you would have one less side to enjoy the scenery. That means that you would have only 270-degree accessibility to enter and look outside your tent. There are also models that would include a sky view window as well. That is usually not a dealbreaker for most of the people but some do like having windows on all 4 sides.
Soft Shell Roof Top Tent
Soft shell roof top tent as you can guess by the name does not come with any kind of shell. It does however still have a very sturdy and durable base. They are a lot lighter and a lot less expensive than the hard shell ones and can also provide a good shelter from any outside elements. They don’t typically use gas charged struts to open, instead you would have to manually fold them out. That being said, these kinds on roof top tents can only have one type of opening style and it is the “Fold Out” style.
Unlike the hard shell ones that you can just close when not using it is recommended that you put on a PVC travel cover that the tent comes with to protect it from any outside elements. Soft shell roof top tents are also less aerodynamic and will not reduce the wind drag and noise unlike the hard shell ones. They are still a good style tent to buy especially if you have a smaller vehicle that cannot support as much weight but you would still want to have your own roof top tent for your next adventure.

Aspen Lite FSR Rooftop Tent
The FSR Aspen Lite hard top tent is our preferred choice as a rooftop tent for trucks. Why? Well, first of all any shorter or smaller roof top tent is perfect for truck beds, because they will fit on almost all truck bed racks, even the low ones. Yakima Roof Top Tent
The Yakima roof top tent model, or at least the most popular one, is the Yakima Skyrise (now known as the SkyRise HD). It’s a tent that has been around for over 6 years, with different modifications happening through the years to improve it’s comfort and durability. As you may know, Yakima is one of the top three crossbar manufacturers in the world alongside Thule and Rhino-Rack, their roof top tent fits perfectly with their racks, and integrates seamlessly with other accessories they make.
It’s comfortable, comes with a 2.5” thick density foam mattress, as well as a 600D ripstop canvas, which is one of the thickest in the market. On top of that, given it’s sold by Yakima distributors, you’re likely to find it all over the country at your local Yakima dealer.
That said, it’s still lacks some important features such as an aluminum plate base, accessories such the annex, a thicker mattress or boot bags (you must purchase them separately). Still, it’s a good tent that will last long, it’s lightweight, which is better for cross bars, and comes with a 2 year warranty.

Smittybilt Roof Top Tent
The Smittybilt Overlander has been one of the oldest tents in the market. Such has been its success, that this tent comes in both the traditional 3 person size, as well as the XL size, which comfortably accommodates 4. But wait, there’s more, there are even Gen 2 models now, and as such Smitty offers you four rooftop tents to choose from.
We will focus on our favorite one given its legacy, price and comfort, which is the Smittybilt Overlander XL roof top tent, ideal to fit 4 adults comfortably, and go over pretty much any vehicle. You can add to it an annex covering the ladder for additional space for storage of bags or other camping equipment. Even without the annex the tent is huge, and given the price, well, it’s hard to find another model of that size with such a good price.
This XL tent comes in a tan colored canvas, weighing only 132 lbs, which is perhaps one of the lightest when compared to other models that size. It has a sleeping footprint of 92.5” x 75”, and a height of 51” when open. Comfortable. With some extras such as an interior LED light strip, the show bags on the sides of the ladder, and a sky light. The tent is suited for 4-eaon camping, with the only minor drawback being the outter base not being honeycomb or diamondplate aluminum, but a traditional aluminum/polyurethane sheet which doesn’t insulate as much. Despite that, for the price, this is top quality,

23Zero Walkabout 87 Largest Roof Top Tent
Curious about the largest rooftop tent on the market? Look no further than the 23Zero Walkabout 87, boasting the title of the largest rooftop tent worldwide, especially in terms of sleeping capacity. With a sprawling sleeping area measuring 87” x 96”, it boasts the most expansive mattress available. Equipped with two ladders and entrances, it stands out as one of the few true 5 to 6-person tents globally.
But its grandeur doesn’t end there. This tent earns its stripes as a 4-season shelter, featuring innovative patented technology from 23Zero, known as the LST (Light Suppression Technology). Diy Roof Top Tent
A DIY roof top tent is something that we get asked more and more everyday. Here’s our take: if you have the ability to make, most likely a clamshell aluminum or even wood roof top tent, then try it. Why not? The design is simple, and with a good frame construction, good stainless steel hardware and hinges, you can pull it off.
It’s likely that there will be some issues such as finding then the right insulating pads, the mattress, attaching the canvas to the frame in the right way, so on and so forth. But the truth is, we have seen people do it, and most of the time with either aluminum or wooden structures. That said, all these people have had some sort of background with either power tools, carpentry or contractor experience. It’s a nice project, test it out.
We do, however, recommend getting a roof top tent from any of the brands we sell. They are all reputable, experienced manufacturers, that have been around for years and years, we have tested their tents personally and we know the backing their products have. We firmly believe a roof top tent is an investment, one that’s safe, will last for years and years and years if you take care of it, whilst a diy rooftop tent might not.
Roof Top Tent Accessories
There are many different roof top tent accessories to choose from, most aren’t really universal, because each brand manufactures their own accessories. For example, roof top tent ladders can be exclusive to one tent brand. However, in this section we’ll mention some universal roof top tent accessories to use with almost any brand!
Roof Top Tent Mounting Brackets
Most roof top tents use similar mounting systems, that would be with allow brackets that insert on the channels of the tent’s base rails, which then attach onto the roof rack or crossbars with two bolts and a stainless steel plate securing those bolts passing underneath the rack. You get the point.
However, there are universal mounting brackets that will help make your life easier. Most rack companies are now designing these, and the best example are the Front Runner roof top tent mounting brackets.
They work exclusively with the Front Runner racks, but they make it a breeze to just mount the tent, secure it to these brackets (or feet as they call them), and you’re good to go. Prinsu, Sherpa and other brands also manufacture their own.
Roof Top Tent Heater
Roof top tent heaters have become very, very common. Our preferred choice is the Mr. Buddy Heater, an excellent item. If you’re looking for alternative tent heater options, you can find them here.
Roof Top Tent Ladder
Most brands make different ladders depending on their tent. Recommending one would be impossible, but instead we’ll make a short segment on what ladder you want: telescoping or sliding.
Honestly, both options are very good, will hold your weight and work perfectly fine. Telescoping ladders are sturdier, and seem more solid, however, the are heavier, take more space, and if there’s dust, sand or other elements that get in between the telescoping tubes, it can be harder to “close” the ladder. You will need some sort of lube.
Sliding ladders aren’t as sturdy, don’t seem as stable, but are lighter, easier to replace, take less room, and overall have “less problems” when it comes to handling dust, sand or water. They can however bend more easily.
What’s better? Honestly, whatever your tent brand supplies you with, that’s enough.
Roof Top Tent Hoist
Roof top tent hoists are a life saver if you park your vehicle in a garage and you want to take the tent off from the roof easily. Install a classic hois in the ceiling of your garage (see one here), and it’s as simple as tying the tent to the hoist and releasing it from the roof rack. Then, just pull the hoist up, and you’re good to go.
Thanks to these hoists you also have one of the best storage places ever: the roof of your garage, where essentially you’re not taking any room. Plus, pulling up or down is quite effortless. A game changer.
Roof Top Tent Mattress
The Exped Mega Mat has become the most common roof top tent mattress. They are quite universal as they come in different sizes and therefore work with different tents. If you can’t get your hands on one, the hi-density foam mattresses that most roof top tents supply, are really comfortable.
We do agree inflatable mattresses are sometimes comfier, plus they have the advantage of being deflated, hence allowing more storage space inside the tent. For example, iKamper’s inflatable mattress, which you can see by clicking the button below, is a fantastic mattress which would also fit on other tents with similar dimensions.
This mattress can be deflated, hence you can take it out and carry it around by just storing it in your vehicle. So yes, inflatable mattresses are the what most people deem to be better!
Roof Top Tent FAQS
How to install a roof top tent?
Installing a roof top tent is pretty easy but it may take a bit of time as you would have to lift up a heavy object onto your roof rack or bed rack. You would need a roof top tent mounting brackets to safely secure your tent and then you’re good to go.
How to secure a roof top tent?
Securing a roof top tent begins with the right mounting system, which is essentially securing and tightening the bolts in the brackets as well as you can. Another important part on how to secure a roof top tent comes from making sure the roof rack or crossbars are properly installed on your vehicle’s roof.
After that, some hard shell roof top tents, such as Eezi-Awn, OVS or even iKamper, have lockable latches, which let you shut your tent without the fear of anyone opening it or stealing anything from inside of it.
However, we do think most tents are quite secure, since it’s not that simple to mount them, install them, or the other way around.
Why are roof top tents so popular?
Roof top tents are popular as they offer a lot more benefits than a regular camping tent. They are safer, more durable and robust, and can be deployed in less than a minute.
Is roof top tent worth it?
Investing in a good and reliable roof top tent is definitely worth it. As we talked about in the beginning of our article, a roof top tent can offer many things and make your next camping or overlanding trip a whole lot better. Besides being able to deploy in less than a minute, a roof top tent also offers a more secure and comfortable place to sleep than a regular camping tent or even your car.
How much does a roof top tent weigh?
The lightest roof top tent currently in the market is the C6 Rev X Tent, which weighs 77 lbs. Other tents can weigh up to over 200 lbs. Therefore, knowing how much exactly a roof top tent is difficult, as there are many models, brands, sizes and designs. However, most tents will weigh between 120 and 175 lbs.
What are the benefits of a roof top tent?
A roof top tent offers a safe space to sleep away from the ground and away from any potential danger. It is also very durable and can withstand even the harshest weather conditions. And on top of all that a roof top tent can be deployed in less than a minute and does not take up any additional space on your campsite as it sits on your vehicle!
Can I put a roof top tent on my canopy?
Yes you can! Before getting your desired tent make sure that your truck bed canopy can support its weight as well as the weight of the people that’ll be using it.
What is the best roof top tent?
We can’t really choose one tent as the best roof top tent since it will depend on your needs. A small roof top tent that fits two people can be the best roof top tent for someone looking for a smaller, lighter and more practical tent. A 5 person roof top tent can be the best choice for someone with a family.
That said, quality wise, we think the best rooftop tents are manufactured by the best and most reliable brands, regardless of the design.
How safe are rooftop tents?
Roof top tents are extremely safe, especially when you think about wildlife hazards in camp sites. By camping in high ground, you are further away from animals such as snakes, scorpions or other ground bugs. You are harder to reach to most creatures.
On top of that, tents are made from very solid bases, frames or shells. The canvases are thick and strong, they can withstand winds of over 50 mph, and are insulated. They are perfect for camping during most seasons if not all seasons and can be opened or closed quite fast incase you need to leave camp during an emergency.
Add to that the fact that you’re camping over your car, meaning you have access to all your vehicle’s features, and you know you are safer, much safer than camping in a ground tent.
Does an insulated roof top tent exist ?
Yes, most roof top tents are insulated. All tents with a base have insulation in them, either as a form of an insulating pad or panel, or simply because insulation happens naturally when there are two panels with a space of air in between. All roof top tents, except some very specific lighter models, have a base with either an insulating panel inside of it, or air in between the floor and exterior aluminum panel. Therefore, they are insulated.
Clearly, there are some tents with better insulation, such as FSR, 23Zero, Eezi-Awn and iKamper, which tend to add insulating pads on purpose, to suit 4-season camping. However, all RTTs are insulated.
